Valley View Village in Des Moines, Iowa, was recently featured on KCCI for its intergenerational reading program, which connects assisted living residents and elementary students to build literacy skills, relationships, and community.
Building Literacy Through Intergenerational Connections
Every Thursday during the school year, Valley View Village welcomes fourth and fifth grade students from Phillips Elementary. The students visit assisted living residents to read together, creating a shared experience that strengthens both literacy and relationships across generations.
KCCI highlighted the program as an example of how senior living communities in Des Moines can support education while enriching residents’ lives.
“We thought at first it would be about practicing reading, and it really ended up being something about forging generations,” Phillips Elementary Principal Kristy Fitzgerald told KCCI.
From Reading Practice to Meaningful Relationships
While visits begin with reading books, they often evolve into conversations, laughter, and lasting friendships. Over time, these weekly interactions create genuine connections between students and residents.
“Over the year, a bond does absolutely build,” Fitzgerald says. “It’s kind of sad, too, when we graduate fifth-graders.”
This progression from structured literacy support to organic social connection is what makes intergenerational programs in senior living especially impactful.
A Student and Resident Bond That Stands Out
One example featured in the story is fifth grader Nora Brown, who said, “I’ve always liked reading and doing reading clubs, and I thought it would be a great way to meet some new people.”
During her time visiting Valley View Village, Nora developed a close relationship with resident Nancy Hanson, a former East High School teacher.
“I really, really love this girl,” Nancy told KCCI.
Even as Nora transitions to middle school, both she and Nancy hope to stay connected.
“I want her to come back and visit me,” Nancy says.
Life Enrichment in Assisted Living
The partnership between Valley View Village and Phillips Elementary highlights the value of intergenerational programs in senior living communities. Residents benefit from increased social engagement, while students gain confidence in reading and communication skills.
Programs like this show how assisted living communities in Des Moines can play an active role in the broader community, supporting both education, and emotional well-being.
